Macon County Schools
 Macon
County NC is one of the fastest growing counties in
the state of North Carolina. The Macon County Public
School system serves almost 4,400 students with six
elementary schools, one middle school, and one high
school. There are also two K-12 schools located in
Nantahala and Highlands, as well as an early college
high school. Students in the Highlands and Scaly
Mountain area attend Highlands School, one of our
K-12 schools. Each of our schools are accredited by
the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools, as
well as the North Carolina State Board of Education.
Macon County is fortunate to have a dedicated team
of educators who work side by side with parents to
ensure each student is given the opportunity to
reach their full potential. Most schools have a
relatively low class size when compared to the state
average, which means more one on one interaction
between students and teachers. Highlands School
serves all K-12 students in the Highlands NC and
Scaly Mountain areas, and offers advanced placement
classes for academically gifted students as well as
career and technical courses for students who do not
plan on attending college. Several of our area
schools have been awarded School of Distinction and
School of Excellence honors over the years.
