Smoky Mountains". First occupied by the
Cherokee Indians as well as early American Pioneers,
Otto became a township in 1909, and it was well into
the 1920's before cars were brought to Otto as US
441 was not paved until 1925.
The climate of Scaly Mountain and Otto is what keeps people

on the Eastern Continental Divide, we enjoy cooler
weather in the summer, perfect for those looking to
beat the heat. The summer months usually don’t get
much hotter than 75 degrees, with the nights cooling
off to the upper 50’s and low 60’s. Our area also
receives both a plentiful amount of rainfall and,
counter-intuitively, abundant sunshine, which
creates a lush, gorgeous landscape for Scaly
Mountain and the surrounding area.
One of the biggest draws of Scaly Mountain and Otto
NC is that
you can enjoy mountain-top living on the Highlands
plateau while avoiding the tourism, traffic, and
crowds of Highlands itself. From Spring to Fall, the
town of Highlands is an incredibly popular tourist
destination, especially for others in the southeast

lower elevations.
