Highlands, NC
 Highlands
is a small mountain town in Macon County NC. It is
located in the Appalachian Mountains on a plateau
that straddles the Eastern Continental Divide, at an
elevation of 4,118 feet. Founded in 1875 as a
trading crossroads, and evolving into a golfer’s
paradise in the 1930’s when Bobby Jones founded the
Highlands Country Club, Highlands is now one of the
more popular tourist destination towns in the
Western North Carolina Mountains. The town of
Highlands is dotted with a number of antique
dealers, restaurants, inns, and other unique shops,
as well as several buildings on the National
Register of Historic Places. Six of our local
restaurants have received awards from Wine Spectator
for quality and service.
Tourism is the main source of income for the economy
of Highlands. Tourism is mostly seasonal, running
from March to November. The normal population of
about 1,000 swells to anywhere from 10,000 to 15,000
during peak season when tourists from all over the
southeast come to Highlands NC to escape the heat
and humidity of the surrounding lower elevations.
Our high altitude makes Highlands one of the coolest
towns in the southern United States during the
summer months. While our area is frequently
blanketed with warm sunshine, we also receive almost
90 inches of rainfall per year due to air masses
being forced from low elevations around us up the
plateau. When the air cools the result is frequent
precipitation. This combination of abundant sunshine
and plenty of rain makes the Nantahala National
Forest that surrounds us particularly lush and
vibrant; another reason so many people visit
Highlands NC each year.
